Peterborough Plant Evacuation Sept 16, 2011On Friday September 16th just before noon, management at GE Motors was made aware of a note with a bomb threat that concerned a specific piece of equipment in a specific area in the Motors plant. The immediate concern was the safety and security of employees and GE Motors made the decision to evacuate all Motors personal and notify the police. Subsequently, the campus Emergency Response Team was called into action and GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy Canada (GEH-C) management proceeded to call an immediate evacuation as well. The evacuation of GEH-C operations was completed in an efficient, orderly fashion. Although there was never a specific threat or any information regarding the GEH-C business, we wanted to ensure the safety and security of our employees as well. Once the decision was made to evacuate, no reentry was permitted until the all clear was given by the police and their investigation. Shortly after 5:00 pm, Motors management was notified that the concerned area was deemed safe and the threat determined to be a hoax. The police then turned the site back to local management. Although a potentially serious event was avoided and found to be a false threat, it was a good exercise of our emergency response action plans and procedures. Full plant and business operations resumed Monday Sept 19, 2011 as planned. Thank you to all GEH-C employees and residents for your cooperation and patience. |
