Torsional Monitoring & Protection

GE has developed equipment to perform torsional monitoring and protection of the turbine-generator shaft. The Torsional Stress Relay (TSR) is a digital protective relay that provides trip output contacts when shaft fatigue reaches predetermined levels. Two separate trip output circuits are provided, each with separate settings.

In addition to supplying protection equipment, GE performs torsional studies. Recently, we evaluated the impact of a steel mill load on turbine-generators to determine the potential for damage to the turbine-generators. Where this potential exists, remediation processes can be recommended.
